Traffic director focuses on street solutions

As the traffic director, how do you deal with not having wide enough or enough roads for the population?

A: The first step is really the planning aspect of looking at the adequacy of the roadway infrastructure relative to what we would project the population to be at any one given time. We do spend quite a bit of time looking at the demographic basis for the city of Murfreesboro and surrounding area and most of our future plans are evolving down the city's major thoroughfare plans. These are plans that are updated every five to seven years, and allows us to take a fresh look at the demographic populations and the changes in our community over time. And looking at those demographics, we would look at the population base and then also translate that into vehicles and the amount of traffic that one would expect to result from the changes in the population and the roadways that are currently in place.

dark matter

He might call and say, "What about this?" He makes suggestions: "I'd like this, I'd like that." I'm free to say I think that's a bad idea. But he is my boss so I have to defend it.

That explains a lot. ... 12:35 P.M.

On Second Thought, Annie, Don't Get Your Gun

As Jack Shafer noted in 2005, even the press loves Jobs. Nobody—no board member, or analyst, or hedge-fund manager, or columnist—will step up to say that Jobs should go. A future without Jobs is simply too grim to contemplate. Writing in New York this week, John Heilemann cites an analyst who believes the company would instantly lose $14 billion in market capitalization if Jobs were forced out.

Bad news piles up for British economy

The bad news on the British economy piled up further Monday as one report found that activity in the services industry fell at the end of 2007 and another survey revealed that companies are at their most pessimistic in five years.

Retail stocks were also hit amid fears that grocer J Sainsbury PLC and department store Marks & Spencer PLC may report weak Christmas trading figures later this week.

Sainsbury shares dropped 3.6 percent to 391 pence ($7.71) before its earnings report Thursday, while Marks & Spencer stock fell 3.8 percent to 498.5 ($9.83) before its update Wednesday.

Holiday retail figures have so far been mixed. While electronics group DSG International PLC issued a profit warning last week after poor seasonal trading, department stores House of Fraser and John Lewis both reported strong sales.

Off The Beaten Path: Reptile Retailers

(CBS13) If you want a very exotic and different pet, you might want to check out a new store in Auburn. You might be surprised to find out what's for sale.A couple of guys in Auburn decided to gamble everything turning their hobby into their profession. Shawn Thomas likes lizards and turtles."They are an ambush predator and so they'll hang out in the moss and weeds and when a fish goes by, they'll snatch him," said Shawn. But Shawn's business partner Robert Bissell likes snakes."These are ball pythons. They are locally bred and for $49.95 per snake they are a very popular snake, they don't get very large."Robert and Shawn just opened this exotic reptile shop and already they have one of the state's largest displays of colorful and bizarre creatures like hissing cockroaches from Madagascar or baby green anacondas which will grow to be one of the largest snakes in the world.

Why You Should Believe the Hype

Expectations and hype are a big part of sports, and perceptions have become a reality. Few athletes are ever worthy of the amount of praise they receive before ever playing a professional game, but even fewer of those who garner these accolades go on to exceed the lofty expectations.

Like the NBAs most recent focus of the barrage of early attention, LeBron James, Connecticuts Diana Taurasi gives us all good reason to believe in it again. Just a few months into their rookie seasons, James and Carmelo Anthony have been even better, even earlier than all of the hype predicted. They were next. They are now.

As is Taurasi. She is a guaranteed sure thing. Like LeBron, Taurasi has been a centerpiece of the amateur basketball world for several years. As the preeminent female collegiate athlete for three years, there may be about as much drama and anticipation over who the Phoenix Mercury will select with their first pick as there was when the Cleveland Cavaliers had the first pick in last years NBA Draft.
